AlmaVerde Village & Spa in DestiNet’s “Atlas of Excellence”

AlmaVerde Village & Spa has been included in DestiNet’s “Atlas of Excellence”, a listing of eco-certified sustainable tourism products and services. It is the only Portuguese destination currently listed.

DestiNet is an information portal set up to promote the development of sustainable consumption and production in the tourism sector. It is a public private partnership between the European Environment Agency (EEA), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Tourism Organization (UN WTO), and the ECOTRANS Network for Tourism and Sustainable Development.

The DestiNet partnership was registered in 2004 with the objective of providing a user-friendly environment for the tourism community to showcase best practices and share knowledge.

Since 2005 a coherent international content structure has been developed, based on the UNEP/UNWTO publication ‘Making Tourism More Sustainable, a Guide for Policy Makers’ (2005), and more recently, the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria.

In 2009 the EEA added a geographic service to the DestiNet interface to visualize map-based information alongside the portal’s information exchange and communication facilities. This has created a unique knowledge networking tool that links sustainable tourism stakeholders in a quality-assessed information sharing system that leads to a sustainable tourism market-place of goods and services.

With the new map-based software and its multi-thematic, multi-level and multi-stakeholder approach, DestiNet is now being used to set up other knowledge networks on key topics including climate change, biodiversity, poverty alleviation and certification.
